Smoking

Smoking while your are pregnant poses very serious health problems for your unborn baby. Smoking:
• passes nicotine and cancer causing drugs to your fetus through the placenta
• prevents optimal growth for your baby
• impairs nourishment to your baby
• increases your baby’s chances of being born too soon (prematurely) or will die
• smoking can affect the amount of milk your breasts make

If you’re a smoker, now is the time to stop. Talk with your doctor before using nicotine patches or gum or any over the counter stop smoking aid. Ask you doctor for the safest way to stop smoking during pregnancy.

Alcohol

How much alcohol you can drink without affecting your baby is not known. All of the following amounts have been shown to have harmful effects.
• daily drinking of alcohol

Because no one knows how much is safe, it is best not to drink at all while you’re pregnant. If you have a drinking problem, talk with your doctor about ways to help you get help to quit.
