There are more and more stylish diaper bag options available these days, and moms are sure to find something that matches their style. The Skip Hop Chelsea Downtown diaper bag offers the storage and organization you need without screaming “I’m a nappy bag!” It is big enough for over-packers but not overly bulky. But at the price point it is listed at, does it offer enough features?
I bring everything with me when I go out with my son. Snacks, sippy cups, toys, books..the list goes on. So I need a bag to accommodate my overpacking. The Skip Hop Chelsea bag does just that. There is plenty of space for everything your little girl or boy will need while you’re out and about. It even has enough space for nursing needs like a nursing cover or pump parts. Despite the space, it doesn’t feel overly bulky and weighs just 2 pounds so it isn’t heavy in and of itself.
The Chelsea bag has 12 pockets, 4 of which are interior – plenty of compartments to organize all you want. This is another must for me for diaper bags. I like to have a pocket for snacks, a pocket for diapers, one for lotion and sanitizer. You get the picture. I find it easier to pack that way because I know what should be where!
I especially like that it has two insulated bottle holders. I initially had a bag that had a bottle holder and when I switched to one that didn’t, I kept forgetting to pack a bottle of water for my son! Designated compartments act like a checklist to me and I love them.
The insulated bottle compartments are roomy enough for sippy cups, but it is important to note that they are not big enough for most sippy cups with handles. Of course you can stick sippy cups with handles in the main, large section of the bag, they just won’t be as insulated.
The Chelsea Downtown diaper bag is unique and stylish. It is mainly nylon, making it durable, but it features leather and gold metal details, giving it a designer bag feel. I personally love that there are several ways to carry it. You can use the tote handles or the shoulder strap. It also has stroller clips to allow you to neatly strap it onto your stroller handle.
Skip Hop has many other cute colorful and patterned diaper bags, but I like the simple black that this comes in. That way your husband won’t mind carrying it around too! It doesn’t scream “diaper bag” which is a plus too. It is casual, yet dressy, making it very versatile. Whether you are going to the mall or going to a play date, it fits any occasion.
Not just a diaper bag!
Right after I got my diaper bag at my baby shower, I used it as a carry on bag on my flight home. I like that this bag can be used for other things and not just to carry baby things! I think this helps justify the higher cost for this bag – if you can get more than just a couple of years out of it, the more reason to get it!
It even has feet!
Skip Hop really thought of everything with this bag. It has metal feet on the bottom of it to keep it off of the ground. I know I’m always tossing my diaper bag here and there so this ensures it won’t get torn up on the bottom. It also comes with a changing pad that fits nicely within it.
Easy to clean
Because of it’s nylon material, the Chelsea bag is easy to wipe clean. It isn’t machine washable (I haven’t run into many diaper bags that are!), but it can be easily spot cleaned if you do spill juice or other goodies in it.
There are many quality diaper bag options at a fraction of the cost of this Skip Hop Chelsea bag. You can find other bags with plenty of space and separate compartments just like this one, so why is the Chelsea bag more expensive? It really comes down to the look of it. It has stylish looks, which people are willing to pay more for. However, there is some concern that despite its glamour, this chic bag is overpriced. It probably depends on your preference. If you’re concerned about it feeling too cheap, I’d say give it a try – what’s the worst that can happen? You can always return it if you get it and aren’t a fan.
Takes up precious arm space
Despite all of its features and good looks, I personally prefer to have a diaper bag that is a backpack or that I can wear across my body, so that both of my arms are free. The Chelsea bag requires you to wear it on your shoulder or carry it in your hand, leaving you with less free use of your arms. Of course, this is typically what you run into when carrying a pocketbook or bag, but I depend on my arms even more now that I have a child, so I like them to be as free as possible!
A diaper bag backpack distributes the weight more evenly for my back which is personally more comfortable. But I know there are plenty of people out there who don’t mind a shoulder/hand bag type of diaper bag.
While you can adjust the shoulder strap and it is possible to wear it cross-body, it’s just not the type of a bag I like to carry that way. Although it isn’t an overly bulky bag, I just don’t find it comfortable to wear cross body.
More pockets, please!
Despite the surplus of pockets, the Skip Hop Chelsea bag lacks some organization that I like to see. It doesn’t have a zippered interior pocket, which is where I like to keep things like cash or jewelry. I’m pretty picky about zippered pockets and am always looking for something to hit all of my needs, but it is hard to find.
If you wear the shoulder strap on bare skin, you may find it irritating. The shoulder strap is made of a material that isn’t the softest and if you have a lot of stuff in the bag, it tends to dig into your skin a bit. This is another reason I like backpack diaper bags because they typically have softer shoulder straps, but as long as you’re wearing something in between the strap and your skin, you should be okay.
The Skip Hop Chelsea Downtown bag is moderately priced. There are cheaper options available but they may not be a chic or trendy looking. In terms of similar bags out there, I find the Chelsea bag fairly priced.
The Chelsea bag has rave reviews. Most negative comments focus on the material, saying it should be better material for the cost of the bag. I think the material is good for diaper bag use, though. You don’t want material that won’t be easy to clean if you are carrying around liquids and potentially sticky contents.

A diaper bag is one item that I feel is worth it to spend a little extra to get better quality. The better quality, the longer it can last, and the more use you will get out of it. The Skip Hop Chelsea diaper bag doesn’t feel like a bulky diaper bag yet it has enough storage to get you through your busy day. While personally I prefer backpack diaper bags, I think this is a great option for anyone looking for a tote bag type of diaper bag. Is it a must? No. But sometimes you need to treat yourself to something special. Being a mom is a tough job, after all!
