Britax Advocate ClickTight Review – Is It worth stretching your budget?

The Britax Advocate ClickTight car seat is a higher end, higher priced seat with some good features and some red flags.  It is very sturdy, safe and comfortable. However, there are some things you need to know about installing the seat and there have been some recalls. At this price, there are other choices with fewer downsides and better customer ratings.

Britax Advocate ClickTight Offers Easy Installation

The ClickTight line is really nice because they take the effort out of installing the car seat. The have made it where you can properly install the car seat the right way within five minutes. There is no guess work in how to do it or if it is done correctly. It is what makes the Advocate a good car seat.

There is a turn button on the front of the car seat. You need to push it down and turn it to raise the seat. Once you raise the seat, you put the seatbelt over the base. Then just click the seat down back into place. You can change cars quickly.

However, if you are ever in an accident and need to move the car seat with your child in it, you will have to cut the seatbelt (because you won’t be able to raise the seat with the child in it). This can cause confusion if the first responder isn’t familiar with it. It can also be dangerous if you do not have a way to cut the belt in an emergency.

Recalls: The downside of the Advocate Clicktight is that it has been recalled several times. They have a great product when it works properly. However, it has been known to lose screws and the turn button that is supposed to release the seat will stick and then you cannot remove the car seat from the car. I found that to be frustrating when it seems like an otherwise great seat.

Placing your Child into the Advocate Clicktight

The Advocate Clicktight is a well-made car seat design. I really like that it is a convertible car seat that can grow with my son. I really dislike the way that the straps twist and turn. The harness is supposed to be easy to snap into place. It is, after you spend the time untangling it.

They Can Slip Out: My son doesn’t like the straps either. The harness is too easy to adjust. The combination of the two means that he is always pushing down the harness and slipping his arms out. Of course, this isn’t safe so I end up pulling off the road and detangling it before I can re-latch him into place. Honestly, the strap situation is a problem with a lot of car seats. Realistically, it doesn’t have to be. It would be nice for the Advocate to really address this problem.

As a convertible car seat, the Advocate is disappointing. The straps do not fit right to use in an extended rear facing position. It is a struggle to use rear facing past about eighteen months. This probably won’t bother me as much if it didn’t advertise as such. If you want to leave your child rear facing longer than a year, go for a different car seat. You can struggle with it and make it work. You just have to put serious effort into it.

The Britax Advocate ClickTight is Comfortably Safe

The way that the Advocate is built ensures that it is safe. The harness system will keep your child from flying forward. The side impact is cushioned. The threads are V-shaped to control how they tear away. The steel base absorbs the energy.

Look on the side of the interior. You will see cushioning that will support your little one’s head. That cushioning is three layers of protection. It absorbs the impact so that your child is jarred as little as possible.

Makes for a Nice Nap: Little ones are known for sleeping on the ride home. The Advocate allows them to nap without banging their head with every bump.  The straps are also wide enough that they will not dig into tender skin. It makes for an easier ride and a better-rested child.

Take a look at the Britax Advocate Overall

Pros

  • The Britax Advocate ClickTight is easy to install. The Advocate can be installed in about five minutes. There is no guess work to install it quickly.
  • It is comfortable. There is adequate padding to enable naps on long trips. The straps are easy to adjust.
  • The  height adjustments can be adjusted with one hand.
  • The Britax Advocate ClickTight has high safety ratings. You can get the specifications here.

Cons

  • The Advocate has seen quite a few recalls, even if they do offer replacements, it is still disconcerting.
  • The straps tangle easily which make it harder to buckle your child.
  • The best features, like the easy click system, are the ones that seem to break first. It seems as though you order replacements more often than you actually use it.

Bottom Line

The Britax Advocate Clicktight seems like a great car seat. It gets great reviews, although not as high as some others like the Chicco Nextfit Zip. However, when you begin to dig deeper, you find that they don’t last as long as they say they do. While they do hold up to serious car accidents, it is hard to get past the constant maintenance and the inability to clean it easily. Britax has some great models. However, this one leaves a lot to be desired.
